Chapter 1: A Special Discovery
One bright morning, the Little Red Hen wandered through the farmyard. She loved finding surprises during her walks. That day, near the barn, she discovered a bag of shiny golden seeds.
“What could these be?” she wondered. The Little Red Hen’s eyes sparkled with an idea. “If I plant these seeds, they might grow into wheat. Then I can bake delicious bread!”
Excited, she turned to her friends: the Duck lounging by the pond, the Cat napping under a tree, and the Dog chasing his tail.
“Who will help me plant these seeds?” she asked.
“Not I,” said the Duck. “Not I,” murmured the Cat. “Not I,” barked the Dog.
“Very well, I’ll do it myself,” said the Little Red Hen. She dug the soil, planted the seeds, and patted the ground with care.
Chapter 2: The Growing Wheat
As days turned into weeks, the Little Red Hen cared for the seeds. She watered them each morning and made sure the sun reached them. Before long, tiny green shoots appeared, growing taller and turning into golden stalks of wheat.
One afternoon, she inspected the wheat and declared, “It’s time to harvest! Who will help me cut the wheat?”
“Not I,” said the Duck, splashing in the pond. “Not I,” purred the Cat, stretching lazily. “Not I,” yawned the Dog, rolling in the grass.
“Then I’ll do it myself,” said the Little Red Hen. With steady hands, she cut the wheat and tied it into bundles.
Later, she asked, “Who will help me take the wheat to the mill?”
“Not I,” said the Duck. “Not I,” replied the Cat. “Not I,” barked the Dog.
The Little Red Hen sighed but didn’t complain. She carried the wheat to the mill by herself, where it was ground into fine, soft flour.
Chapter 3: The Smell of Fresh Bread
The next day, the Little Red Hen decided to bake the bread. She mixed the flour with water, yeast, and a pinch of salt. After kneading the dough until it was smooth, she let it rise. Finally, she popped it into the oven.
Soon, a warm, delicious aroma spread through the farmyard. The Duck, the Cat, and the Dog followed the smell to the kitchen.
“Who will help me eat this bread?” asked the Little Red Hen with a knowing look.
“I will!” quacked the Duck. “I will!” purred the Cat. “I will!” barked the Dog.
But the Little Red Hen shook her head. “No, you didn’t help me plant the seeds. You didn’t help me harvest the wheat or carry it to the mill. And you didn’t help me bake the bread. So, I will eat it myself.”
The Duck, the Cat, and the Dog hung their heads, feeling ashamed. They realized they had been lazy and unfair.
As the Little Red Hen enjoyed her bread, her friends made a promise. “Next time, we will help,” they said earnestly.
The Little Red Hen smiled. “We’ll see,” she replied.
From that day forward, the Duck, the Cat, and the Dog joined in every task. Working together made the farm a joyful place, and everyone shared in the rewards.
