Once upon a time, a large tree lived by itself in a peaceful area. It had green foliage, tasty apples, and sturdy branches. A little child called Tom was playing outside one day when he discovered the tree. They were the best of friends after that. The tree was kind and loved Tom very much. From then on, it became known as The Kind Tree.

Tom came to visit the tree every day. He climbed up its trunk, hung from its branches, and played hide and seek among the leaves. He ate apples from the tree and rested under its cool shade. The tree was very happy. The boy loved the tree, and the tree loved him.

But time passed, and Tom grew older. He didn’t visit the tree as much anymore. The tree missed him very much.

One day, Tom came back. He was no longer a little boy—he was a teenager. The tree was excited and said,
“Come and play with me!”
But Tom said,
“I can’t play. I need money to buy some things.”

The tree thought for a moment and said,
“You can take my apples and sell them.”

So Tom picked all the apples and took them to town. He sold them and got money. Then he left. The tree felt lonely, but she was happy she could help.

A long time passed before Tom came back again. Now he was a grown-up.

“Come and climb me,” said the tree.

“I can’t climb anymore,” said Tom. “I need a house to live in.”

“You can cut my branches,” said the tree. “Use them to build your house.”

So Tom cut the branches and took them away. The tree had no more branches left, but she was happy that Tom had a place to live.

Years went by. When Tom returned again, he looked tired.

“I want to travel far away,” he said. “I need a boat.”

“I don’t have a boat,” said the tree. “But you can cut down my trunk and build one.”

So Tom cut down the trunk. He built a boat and sailed away. The tree was now only a stump. She felt sad, but she was still happy she had helped.

Many years later, Tom came back one last time. He was now an old man.

“I don’t need much,” he said. “I just want a place to sit and rest.”

“I am only a stump now,” said the tree softly. “But stumps are good for sitting.”

Tom sat down on the stump. He closed his eyes and smiled.

And The Kind Tree was happy.
