A Special Halloween Episode of The Squishy Society!

The bedroom was darker than usual. Outside the window, a crisp October wind blew the autumn leaves around. It was Halloween night!

Earlier that evening, Adaliz had put on her favorite fairy princess costume and excitedly prepared her orange pumpkin bucket for trick-or-treating. But in her excitement, she had dropped her very first piece of candy—a rare, foil-wrapped chocolate bat—somewhere in the dark hallway near the front door.

Now, the humans were upstairs getting their coats, and the downstairs hallway was completely dark, lit only by the eerie orange glow of the carved Jack-o’-lanterns on the front porch.

Inside the toy bin, Bao, the dumpling squishy, looked at his team.

“The chocolate bat is missing,” Bao announced. “It is a Halloween tragedy! We must retrieve it and put it back in the orange bucket before Adaliz leaves the house.”

“But the hallway is so dark tonight,” squeaked Crinkle, the paper squishy, shivering a little. “And the humans hung up giant plastic spiders and fake cobwebs everywhere!”

“Do not worry,” said Gigi, the pink mochi squishy. She closed her eyes and concentrated. Suddenly, her soft pink body began to glow brightly in the dark toy bin. “I will be our flashlight!”

“And I will lead the way!” cheered Barnaby.

Barnaby was a mint-green Fuggler squishy. With his mismatched button eyes and funny little teeth, he looked like a tiny, friendly monster. He absolutely loved Halloween. It was his favorite time of the year.

“Barnaby, Gigi, and I will go,” Bao decided. “The Spooky Pumpkin Patrol is ready.”

The three toys slipped out of the bedroom and into the dark hallway. It looked completely different tonight. The shadows were long and stretchy. A giant, black plastic spider was hanging from the ceiling on an invisible string, swaying in the breeze from the front door.

Bao gulped. Even though he was the brave leader, the swaying spider looked very real in the dark.

“Stay close to my light,” Gigi whispered, her pink glow illuminating the wooden floorboards.

They crept down the hallway, navigating around a decorative pile of autumn leaves and a spooky plastic skeleton foot. Finally, near the front door mat, Gigi’s light reflected off something shiny.

“The chocolate bat!” Bao pointed.

But there was a problem. The chocolate bat had rolled right underneath a giant, battery-powered Halloween decoration: a howling black cat with glowing green eyes.

Just as they approached the candy, the decoration suddenly activated. MEOOOWWW! it screeched, shaking back and forth.

Bao and Gigi jumped back in surprise, hiding behind a pair of rubber rainboots. The mechanical cat looked terrifying in the dark.

“We cannot get past that monster!” Gigi whispered, her glow dimming slightly from fear.

But Barnaby didn’t hide. He stood right in front of the screeching plastic cat, his mismatched button eyes looking up at it. He tilted his head.

“It is just a machine, guys,” Barnaby laughed. “Look closely!”

Barnaby bravely walked right up to the mechanical cat. He reached out and patted its plastic paw. Then, he looked at the giant fake spider hanging above them.

“And Mr. Spider up there is just made of rubber,” Barnaby said, waving at the eight-legged toy. “Sometimes, things that look scary in the dark are just silly toys, exactly like us!”

Seeing Barnaby being so brave made Gigi feel much better. Her pink glow returned, brighter than ever. She stretched her elastic mochi arm underneath the shaking mechanical cat and grabbed the foil-wrapped chocolate bat.

“I have it!” Gigi smiled.

Working together, the three squishies pushed the chocolate bat across the hallway. They reached the orange pumpkin bucket sitting on the bench just in time. Bao and Barnaby gave Gigi a boost, and she stretched up to drop the chocolate safely inside.

Seconds later, footsteps came down the stairs. Adaliz and her parents were ready to go.

“Oh good, my chocolate bat is still in my bucket!” Adaliz cheered, picking it up. “Let’s go get more candy!”

From their hiding spot behind the rainboots, the Spooky Pumpkin Patrol watched the family head out into the Halloween night.

“You were very brave, Barnaby,” Bao said as they walked back to the toy bin, guided by Gigi’s warm pink light.

“Halloween isn’t about being scared,” Barnaby smiled, his button eyes crinkling. “It is about dressing up, having fun, and realizing that even monsters can be your friends!”

Learning Through Adventure

Halloween can sometimes be overwhelming for young kids, with so many spooky sights and sounds. “The Spooky Pumpkin Patrol” uses Barnaby’s unique, monster-like appearance to teach a valuable lesson: things that look scary on the outside are often completely harmless (and even friendly!) on the inside. It’s a wonderful story to help children face their fears of the dark and of spooky decorations.

Join the Discussion: After enjoying the story, ask your child:

  1. Barnaby wasn’t scared of the mechanical cat or the rubber spider. When was a time you felt brave in the dark?
  2. If you could go trick-or-treating with any member of The Squishy Society, who would it be and what costume would you wear?
