The Squishy Society Episode 3: The Kitchen Counter Caper
Morning sunlight streamed through the windows, reflecting off the shiny wooden floors of the hallway. The house was quiet. Adaliz had just left for her primary school, and the front door was firmly locked.
Inside the bedroom, the lid of the toy bin slowly pushed open. Bao, the round dumpling squishy, peeked out.
“The house is secure,” Bao announced to the colorful group of toys waiting below. “Good morning, Squishy Society.”
Pip, the pink dragon fruit squishy with green nubs, bounced happily into the center of the room. Cheddar, the bright yellow cheese squishy, rolled out next, purposefully getting his foot stuck in one of his own cheese holes to make everyone laugh. Even Barnaby smiled his crooked, stitched smile.
But Gigi, the glowing pink mochi squishy, was looking out the bedroom door with a worried expression.
“Bao,” Gigi said, her soft voice trembling slightly. “Before Adaliz left, she was very upset. She was working on her school diorama last night, and she forgot the most important piece: the shiny plastic star for the top of her project. I saw her leave it on the kitchen counter!”
The toys gasped. The kitchen was a completely different world. It had cold, slippery floors, loud dripping faucets, and counters that reached into the sky.
“Without that star, her diorama is incomplete,” Bao said, his painted expression turning serious. “The Squishy Society always helps. We must retrieve the star and put it in her homework folder on the dining table before she gets back. Who is ready for a kitchen expedition?”
“I am bouncing with excitement!” Pip cheered.
“I’m in,” said Cheddar, untangling his foot. “I hear there’s real cheese in the kitchen. I want to see if we are related.”
“I will come too,” Gigi volunteered bravely. “My sticky mochi bottom is perfect for slippery floors.”
The three heroes—Pip, Cheddar, and Gigi—waved goodbye to the rest of the team and marched out of the bedroom. The journey down the hallway was long, but soon they reached the kitchen.
The floor was made of smooth, cold tiles. Pip tried to take a step and immediately slid sideways, bumping into a chair leg. Cheddar tried to walk, but his smooth silicone body spun around in circles like a yellow figure skater.
“Whoa! It is like an ice rink!” Cheddar laughed, spinning dizzily.
“Hold my hands,” Gigi instructed. As an ultra-stretchy mochi, Gigi’s material had a natural, grippy stickiness. She held Pip’s hand and Cheddar’s hand, acting as a stable anchor. Slowly and carefully, they navigated the slippery tiles until they reached the base of the giant kitchen cabinets.
Far, far above them was the edge of the counter.
“How do we climb a flat wooden wall?” Pip asked, looking straight up.
Cheddar examined the cabinet drawers. Each drawer had a shiny silver knob. “Look at those handles,” Cheddar pointed. “They are like little steps! But they are too far apart for a normal jump.”
“We are not normal,” Gigi smiled. “We are squishies.”
Gigi reached up and grabbed the lowest silver knob with both hands. “Cheddar, you are next.”
Cheddar climbed up Gigi’s back. When he reached the knob, he did something brilliant. He took one of the large holes in his yellow cheese body and hooked it right over the silver knob! He was hanging there perfectly, completely safe and secure.
“That is a gouda trick!” Cheddar joked. “Gigi, stretch to the next one!”
While Cheddar anchored them on the first knob, Gigi stretched her pink, elastic body as far as she could, reaching high above her head until she grabbed the second knob. Now she was a pink, stretchy bridge between the two drawers.
“Your turn, Pip!” Gigi called out.
Pip backed up on the floor. She took a deep breath, ran, and bounced with all her might. She landed on Gigi’s stretched, soft back, and used it like a trampoline to bounce even higher! Boing! Pip flew through the air, right over the highest drawer, and landed softly on the cool granite surface of the kitchen counter.
“I made it!” Pip cheered.
The counter was vast, but there, sitting next to a fruit bowl, was the shiny plastic star. Pip ran over and grabbed it.
“I have the star! But how do I get it down?” Pip called over the edge.
Gigi and Cheddar looked around. Hanging from the oven handle right next to them was a long, soft kitchen towel that reached almost to the floor.
“Toss it onto the towel!” Cheddar yelled.
Pip aimed carefully and threw the plastic star. It landed softly on the fabric of the towel and slid down, safely landing on the floor. Pip followed right after, jumping onto the towel and sliding down it like a giant playground slide, laughing the whole way down.
Gigi unstretched herself, and Cheddar unhooked his cheese hole from the knob. They all landed safely on the towel.
Working together, the three small toys pushed the plastic star across the floor, out of the kitchen, and all the way to the dining table. Gumdrop had come out to meet them, and with his heavy strength, he easily lifted the star and dropped it right into Adaliz’s open homework folder.
When the team returned to the toy bin, Bao gave them a proud nod.
“Another successful mission,” Bao said.
“It was amazing,” Pip bounced. “Gigi was a bridge, I was a bouncing ball, and Cheddar…”
“I was a hook!” Cheddar interrupted, looking very proud of himself. “Having holes in your body isn’t so bad after all!”
The Squishy Society laughed together, safe and sound in their colorful bin, ready for whatever adventure tomorrow might bring.
