The Squishy Society Episode 1: The Great Desk Expedition
The heavy wooden bedroom door clicked shut. Footsteps faded down the hallway, followed by the distant sound of the front door closing. The humans had officially left for school.
Inside the colorful bedroom, everything was perfectly still. But only for a moment.
From the bottom of a large plastic toy bin, a gentle shuffling began. A soft, round white figure pushed its way out from under a pile of building blocks. This was Bao. He was a classic dumpling squishy, with perfectly pleated edges and a calm, reassuring smile painted on his face. Bao stretched his soft material, taking a deep breath to regain his perfectly round shape after being squished under a heavy toy truck all night.
“The coast is clear,” Bao called out softly. “Squishy Society, it is time to wake up.”
One by one, his friends emerged from their hiding spots. Gigi, the glowing pink mochi squishy, slid gracefully down a plastic slide. Pip, the vibrant pink dragon fruit squishy with soft green nubs on her head, bounced eagerly onto the carpet. Cheddar, the bright yellow cheese squishy, tumbled out of a shoe, shaking off a bit of lint. Following closely behind were Barnaby, the mint-green Fuggler squishy with his mismatched button eyes, and Taba, the ultra-realistic translucent pink bear paw.
Finally, a heavy, solid thump announced the arrival of Gumdrop. He was a tough, purple NeeDoh gumdrop, known for being the strongest toy in the room.
“Is everyone accounted for?” Bao asked, looking over his team.
“Wait,” Gigi said, her smooth material shimmering in the morning sunlight. “Where is Crinkle?”
Crinkle was their newest member, a handmade paper squishy shaped like a small retro juice box. He was stuffed with soft cotton and covered in clear tape, which gave him a wonderful shiny look.
“I am up here,” a small voice called out from high above.
The team looked up. High above the carpet, sitting on the very edge of the giant wooden study desk, was Crinkle. He looked very distressed. The straw on the top of his box was bent sideways, a sure sign that he was worried.
“I accidentally fell out of the backpack when the human was looking for a notebook,” Crinkle called down. “And that is not the worst part. I dropped the human’s favorite silver glitter marker. It rolled right to the back of the desk near the computer screen. If they do not find it when they get home, they might blame the dog!”
Bao nodded seriously. The Squishy Society had one golden rule: always help the humans, and never let the family pets get in trouble.
“Do not worry, Crinkle,” Bao declared. “We are coming up to get you and the marker. It is time for a rescue mission.”
The team gathered at the base of the desk. To a human, a desk is just a piece of furniture. To a squishy toy, it was a towering mountain of smooth wood and dangerous cliffs.
“How do we get up there?” Pip asked, bouncing nervously. “It is too high to jump.”
Barnaby, the nutty squishy of the group, examined the tall rolling chair tucked under the desk. “If we can climb the wheel of the chair, we can reach the seat. From the seat, we can climb the armrest, and from the armrest, we can hop onto the desk.”
“Excellent plan, Barnaby,” Bao said. “Gumdrop, we need your strength to anchor us.”
Gumdrop settled himself firmly against the carpet, providing a heavy, stable base. Gigi, the incredibly stretchy mochi squishy, grabbed Gumdrop’s hand and stretched her body as high as she could, hooking her other arm around one of the plastic chair wheels.
“Climb up,” Gigi encouraged them.
One by one, the team used Gigi as a soft ladder. Pip went first, her soft silicone body providing excellent grip. Cheddar followed, though he got momentarily stuck when one of his cheese holes caught on a loose thread. Taba used her natural stickiness to walk straight up the side of the wheel without slipping at all.
Once they were all on the seat of the chair, they faced the next challenge: the gap between the chair’s armrest and the edge of the desk. It was a wide jump, and a fall would mean tumbling all the way back down to the carpet.
“I will jump first,” Pip volunteered confidently. She backed up, ran as fast as her little legs could carry her, and leaped across the gap. She landed safely on the wooden desk, cheering for herself.
Bao, Barnaby, and Cheddar made the jump successfully. But when it was Taba’s turn, her sticky material caught on the edge of the armrest. She leaped, but she lost her momentum in the air. She was falling short of the desk.
“I have got you,” Gumdrop yelled. The heavy purple gumdrop took a running start and threw himself over the edge. He collided with Taba mid-air, his heavy weight carrying them both forward just enough to land safely on the wooden edge of the desk. Gumdrop flattened completely on impact, but within seconds, he took a breath and puffed right back into his perfect shape.
“Thank you, Gumdrop,” Taba said, pulling herself up.
Now reunited with Crinkle, the team moved across the vast wooden plains of the desk. They dodged giant textbooks, navigated around a forest of pencils, and finally found the silver glitter marker resting against the computer monitor.
“We found it,” Crinkle cheered, his paper straw standing up straight with joy.
But their celebration was interrupted by a shadow falling over the desk. The bedroom door had been pushed open by a curious nose. Whiskers twitched. A pair of glowing yellow eyes stared at them. It was the family cat, the most unpredictable creature in the house.
The cat leaped onto the bed, then onto the desk, landing right between the squishy toys and the edge of the desk. Their escape route was blocked. The cat tilted its head, highly interested in Cheddar’s bright yellow color, and raised a paw to swat him.
“We need a distraction, and we need to get this marker back into the backpack,” Bao commanded, thinking quickly. “Crinkle, you are made of paper. Can you glide?”
“I can try,” Crinkle said bravely.
Gumdrop and Barnaby lifted the heavy silver marker and placed it carefully on Crinkle’s back.
“Pip, Gigi, Taba, create a distraction,” Bao ordered.
The three colorful toys began to jump and wave their arms on the left side of the desk. The cat immediately turned its attention to the bright pink and green colors, stepping away from the edge.
“Now, Crinkle!” Bao shouted.
Crinkle took a running start and leaped off the desk. Because he was made of paper and stuffed with light cotton, he didn’t fall fast. He caught the gentle breeze from the open window and glided gracefully across the room. He steered himself perfectly, landing right inside the open pocket of the school backpack on the floor. The marker was safe.
Back on the desk, the cat realized the toys were not moving targets anymore and lost interest. It curled up on a warm spot near the computer and closed its eyes to sleep.
Moving very quietly, the rest of the Squishy Society slid down the curtains, carefully making their way back to the safety of the carpet.
When they all gathered back inside the toy bin, Bao looked proudly at his team. “Today, we faced a giant mountain and a fierce beast. But by using our different strengths, we succeeded. We stretch, we stick, we bounce, and we glide.”
Crinkle smiled, flattening a small wrinkle on his paper stomach. It had been a wild adventure, but he knew one thing for sure. There was no better feeling than being part of The Squishy Society.
Learning Through Adventure
The Squishy Society isn’t just about fun; it’s about recognizing that everyone brings something unique to the table. In this episode, young listeners learn that physical differences—like Gigi’s stretchiness, Taba’s stickiness, or Gumdrop’s weight—are not weaknesses. They are specialized strengths that, when combined through teamwork, can solve any problem.
