Deep, deep down under the sparkling blue surface of the ocean, where the water is cool and peaceful, lived a very special little submarine named Buster.
Unlike the huge, loud submarines that traveled across the entire world, Buster was small, round, and painted a bright, cheerful shade of yellow. He lived in a cozy underwater cave surrounded by colorful coral reefs that gently swayed back and forth in the ocean currents.
Buster had a very important job in the coral village. While the fish, crabs, and sea turtles played all day in the sunlit waters above, Buster was in charge of the Evening Patrol. His mission was to make sure all his ocean friends were tucked in tight and safe before the dark night covered the sea.
One evening, as the golden sun began to melt into the horizon, casting beautiful purple and orange reflections on the ocean surface, Buster woke up from his daytime nap. His engine purred with a soft, humming sound—hummmm, hummmm—like a gentle lullaby.
He switched on his two front lights, which cast a warm, yellow glow through the dark blue water, and slowly drifted out of his cozy cave.
His first stop was the Kelp Forest. The tall, green kelp leaves were slowly dancing to the rhythm of the tide. Hidden among the leaves were tiny, shimmering silver fish. During the day, they darted around faster than lightning, but now, they were moving slowly, their little eyes heavy with sleep.
“Good evening, silver fish,” Buster hummed softly. “Time to find a quiet leaf and rest your fins.”
The silver fish blew tiny bubbles that floated up to the surface—bloop, bloop, bloop—and snuggled close together behind the thickest kelp leaves, completely hidden and safe.
Next, Buster steered his yellow hull toward the Sandy Shallows. The sand here was incredibly soft, almost like underwater clouds. This was where the ancient sea turtles liked to sleep.
When Buster arrived, he found Toby, the oldest and largest sea turtle in the village, still awake, staring out into the deep ocean.
“Aren’t you sleepy, Toby?” Buster asked, his lights dimming just a little so he wouldn’t bother the old turtle’s eyes.
Toby let out a long, slow sigh. “I am, little Buster. But the ocean is so quiet tonight, I find my thoughts swimming in circles instead of settling down.”
Buster knew exactly what to do. He slowly swam around Toby in a wide, gentle circle, his engine making its soothing hummmm, hummmm sound. He told Toby to watch the rhythm of the water, how it pushed and pulled, always returning, always steady.
“Breathe in the cool water, Toby,” Buster whispered. “And breathe out the busy thoughts. In… and out.”
Toby closed his ancient eyes, listened to Buster’s steady hum, and followed his breathing. Soon, the giant turtle’s flippers relaxed, his head rested on the soft sand, and he fell into a deep, peaceful slumber.
The final stop on Buster’s patrol was the most magical place of all: The Jellyfish Meadow. This was an open area of the sea floor where hundreds of small jellyfish gathered every night.
As Buster approached, the meadow looked like an underwater starry sky. Each jellyfish glowed with a soft, pulsing light—some pink, some blue, some a pale, milky white. They were floating up and down, up and down, like living breathing lamps.
But tonight, the jellyfish seemed restless. They were darting around instead of floating gently.
Buster approached the center of the meadow. He didn’t speak this time; he knew the jellyfish communicated through light and rhythm. So, Buster turned his own yellow headlights off, and then back on again. On… Off… On… Off… Very, very slowly.
The jellyfish stopped their frantic swimming and turned toward the brave little submarine.
Buster began to move his lights in a slow, rhythmic pattern, matching the calm, steady beating of his own engine. He was showing them the rhythm of sleep.
One by one, the jellyfish began to match Buster’s rhythm. Their glowing colors pulsed slowly—bright… dim… bright… dim…
The entire meadow synchronized into one giant, breathing light. The chaotic darting stopped, replaced by a gentle, synchronized floating. They were finally relaxing, their soft lights creating a peaceful, calming blanket over the ocean floor.
His patrol finished, and knowing that every fish, turtle, and jellyfish was safe and asleep, Buster felt his own engine begin to slow down. The hummmm grew quieter and quieter.
He steered himself back to his cozy coral cave. He settled onto the soft, sandy floor, the gentle ocean current rocking him slightly, like a cradle.
He turned off his right headlight. He turned off his left headlight. The ocean around him was dark, quiet, and wonderfully peaceful.
“Goodnight, ocean,” Buster whispered into the water.
And with a final, soft bloop of a bubble from his engine, the brave little yellow submarine drifted into a deep, happy sleep, ready to dream of new underwater adventures.
Goodnight, Buster. Goodnight, ocean.
