The Brave Little Backpack
Once upon a time, in a quiet corner of a cozy room, sat Barnaby.
Barnaby was not a boy, and he was not a bear. Barnaby was a brand-new, bright blue backpack. And tomorrow was a very big day. Tomorrow was The First Day of School.
Most backpacks would be excited. They would zip and unzip with joy. But Barnaby felt a little knot in his straps. His zipper felt tight, and his pockets felt empty and nervous.
“What if I’m not big enough?” Barnaby whispered to the moonlight streaming through the window. “What if I can’t hold all the books? What if I don’t make any friends in the cubby room?”
Just then, a gentle voice floated down from the bookshelf. It was Oliver, the wise old Owl Lamp.
“Who-oo is worrying down there?” asked Oliver, glowing with a soft, warm light.
“It’s me,” sighed Barnaby. “I have the First Day Jitters.”
Oliver smiled warmly. “Ah, the jitters. I know them well. But Barnaby, do you know what you have inside you?”
Barnaby checked his main pocket. “Nothing yet. Just a lunchbox and a red pencil case.”
“No,” chuckled Oliver. “You have space. You have space to carry new stories. You have space to hold magical drawings. And most importantly, you have space for courage.”
Barnaby wasn’t so sure. “How do I find courage?”
“It’s easy,” said Oliver. “Let’s try a magic trick. It’s called the Zipper Breath.”
“Close your eyes,” Oliver whispered. “Now, imagine a zipper going up slowly while you take a deep breath in… Zzzzzip.”
Barnaby took a deep breath, imagining his zipper sliding up, holding all his warmth inside. One, two, three.
“Now,” said Oliver, “imagine the zipper sliding down as you breathe out… Zzzzooop.”
Barnaby let the air out. The knot in his straps loosened. His fabric felt softer.
“Let’s do it again,” said Oliver. “Breathe in… Zip up courage. Breathe out… Zip out worry.”
Barnaby did this three times. With every breath, he felt a little less empty and a little more ready. He realized that he wasn’t just a backpack; he was a keeper of treasures. Tomorrow, he wouldn’t just be carrying books; he would be carrying dreams.
As the moon rose higher, Barnaby looked at the door. He imagined the school bus. He imagined a little boy picking him up gently. He imagined meeting a bright yellow lunchbox and maybe a cool pair of sneakers.
“I think I’m ready,” whispered Barnaby. “I’m strong, I’m sturdy, and I’m ready to learn.”
“Goodnight, brave backpack,” said Oliver, dimming his light.
“Goodnight, Oliver,” said Barnaby.
And as he drifted off to sleep, Barnaby didn’t feel empty anymore. He felt full. Full of hope, full of calm, and ready for the best adventure ever.
We hope this bedtime story for first day of school anxiety helps your little one rest easy tonight. Sweet dreams and happy learning!
