Once upon a time, beyond a vast and beautiful emerald forest, lay the magnificent Valley of the Moving Mountains. Princess Liana, who came from a quiet kingdom near the calm sea, was traveling to this valley for the very first time. She was incredibly excited to meet Princess Elara, a girl her own age, and build a wonderful new friendship.
When Liana arrived at the palace of the valley, Elara greeted her with a polite but nervous smile. The palace was stunning, built with flexible, beautiful wood that could sway safely with the wind. The gardens were filled with bright flowers and tall, ancient trees. However, Liana quickly noticed that Elara was not enjoying the beautiful day. Elara kept her eyes looking down at her shoes. She seemed tense, constantly waiting for something invisible to happen.
As they walked through the garden, Liana gently asked if everything was alright. Elara stopped and looked at the ground. She confessed that she had a deep fear of earthquakes. She lived in a valley where the earth sometimes decided to stretch. She explained that the ground would shift and move, and the feeling made her heart race and her hands feel incredibly cold. She was always worried about when the next movement would come, making it very hard for her to play or relax.
Liana did not laugh, and she did not tell Elara that her fear was silly. Instead, she offered a warm, understanding smile. Liana knew what it felt like to be afraid of things you could not control.
Later that afternoon, while the two princesses were sitting on a soft blanket under a massive, ancient tree, the air suddenly felt very heavy and still. Then, it began.
It was not a sudden jump, but a deep, rolling shift beneath the grass. The earth beneath them began to move in a slow, heavy rhythm. The leaves on the ancient tree above them swayed back and forth, and the wooden palace in the distance flexed gently, just as it was designed to do.
Elara froze completely. Her eyes widened, and her breathing became fast and shallow. She curled her knees to her chest, overwhelmed by the deep vibration traveling through the soil. The fear she had been waiting for all day was finally here, and it felt too big to handle alone.
Liana did not run. She moved closer to Elara and firmly, but gently, held her hand. The warmth of Liana’s hand was immediate and comforting.
“Elara, look at me,” Liana said in a steady, calm voice that cut through the feeling of the moving earth. “The mountains are just stretching. We are safe right here on the soft grass. Let’s be like this ancient tree.”
Liana guided Elara to sit up straight and press her back against the wide, solid trunk of the tree behind them.
“Imagine your legs are deep, heavy roots,” Liana instructed softly, squeezing her friend’s hand. “They go deep into the earth. The earth can move, but the roots hold us steady and safe.”
They began to breathe together, matching the slow, heavy rhythm of the roots. In, slowly, feeling strong. Out, slowly, letting the fear go.
Elara focused entirely on Liana’s warm hand and the solid wood of the tree against her back. She stopped focusing on the shifting ground and started focusing on her deep, steady breaths. She realized she was not alone. Her new friend was right there, holding her steady.
Gradually, the deep vibration in the earth began to fade. The rolling shift became smaller and smaller until the ground was completely still and quiet once again. The mountains had finished their stretching.
Elara opened her eyes and released a long, tired breath. She looked at Liana, who was still smiling warmly.
“We stayed rooted,” Elara whispered, a genuine smile finally appearing on her face.
“We are strong trees,” Liana replied.
From that day forward, Elara and Liana were the best of friends. Elara learned that while she could not stop the mountains from moving, she could always find her roots, breathe slowly, and rely on the warmth of a good friend. The fear was no longer a heavy burden. The valley felt peaceful again, and rest came easily under the quiet, starry sky. Sleep came softly. Sleep came deeply.
