An Afternoon Surprise
Once there was a little girl called Sophie, and she was having tea with her Mummy in the kitchen.
Suddenly, there was a ring at the door.
Sophie’s Mummy said, “I wonder who that could be? It can’t be Daddy, because he has his key. And it can’t be the milkman, because he came this morning. It must be somebody we don’t know.”
Sophie opened the door, and there was a big, furry, striped Tiger Who Came to Tea.
The Tiger looked very polite and said, “Excuse me, but I am very hungry. I wonder if I could come in and have tea with you?”
Sophie’s Mummy said, “Of course. Come in.”
So the Tiger came into the kitchen. He was so big that he nearly knocked over the kitchen table.
The Tiger’s Appetite
Sophie’s Mummy quickly put some plates of sandwiches, buns, and all the cakes onto the table.
The Tiger Who Came to Tea didn’t sit down at the table, but pulled up a chair and began to eat.
He ate all the sandwiches on the plate, and all the buns, and all the biscuits. He drank all the tea in the teapot, and then he ate all the food on the table. He even ate all the cakes that Mummy had baked for tomorrow.
Sophie’s Mummy said, “Would you like some more?”
The Tiger said, “Yes, please!”
So Sophie’s Mummy gave him all of Daddy’s supper, which was cooking in the saucepan, and all the food out of the fridge, and all the packets and tins in the cupboard.
He ate everything. He drank all the milk, all the orange juice, and all of Daddy’s beer. He even drank all the water in the tap!
Then he said, “Thank you for my nice tea. I think I’d better go now.” And he went.
Sophie and her Mummy looked at the empty kitchen. Everything was gone!
Sophie’s Mummy said, “I don’t know what to do. The Tiger Who Came to Tea has eaten all our food and drunk all our drink. And I haven’t got anything for Daddy’s supper.”
A Little Adventure
Just then, Sophie’s Daddy came home. When he heard what had happened, he said, “Cheer up! I know what we’ll do. We’ll all go out to a café and have supper there.”
So they all put on their coats and went out. They walked down the road to a little café. They had a lovely supper with sausages, chips, and ice cream.
In the morning, Sophie and her Mummy went shopping. They bought lots of food, and they bought a very big tin of Tiger Who Came to Tea food—just in case the Tiger should ever come to tea again.
But he never did.
