It was Halloween night, and JJ and his family were getting ready for the big neighborhood parade. The air smelled of caramel apples and fresh pumpkin pie, and the moon peeked through the clouds like a giant lantern.
JJ wore a little pumpkin costume with a matching hat. YoYo twirled in her witch dress with sparkly stars, and TomTom marched proudly in his pirate cape. Even Bingo, the family dog, had a ghost collar that jingled when he wagged his tail.
“Are you ready to say Trick or Treat?” asked Mom, smiling as she handed out candy baskets.
“Ready!” shouted JJ, bouncing up and down.
The family walked through the neighborhood, where glowing pumpkins lit every porch. Children laughed in costumes—fairies, superheroes, and friendly monsters. Houses sparkled with cobwebs and lanterns that flickered in the autumn breeze.
But as they turned the corner, JJ stopped. Across the street stood a house that looked different from the others. Its yard was dark, with only one pumpkin glowing faintly on the porch. The wind rattled the gate, and a bat swooped past the crooked fence.
“Should we skip it?” YoYo asked, holding JJ’s hand.
TomTom grinned. “No way! That’s the spookiest house—there’s probably the best candy inside!”
JJ gulped, his pumpkin hat wobbling, but he nodded bravely. “Okay… let’s try.”
They walked up the creaky path together. The porch boards groaned, and Bingo barked softly. JJ raised his tiny fist and knocked on the door.
Creeeeak… the door opened slowly. Everyone held their breath.
“Trick or treat!” the kids called out.
For a moment, silence filled the air. Then—“Boo!”
Out popped Grandpa, wearing a silly skeleton mask. Behind him, Grandma appeared dressed as a friendly witch, holding a tray of cookies shaped like pumpkins.
The children burst into laughter. “Grandpa! Grandma!” shouted YoYo.
“You gave us a fright!” JJ giggled, hugging Grandma’s legs.
Grandpa chuckled. “That’s what Halloween is for—just a little fun scare.”
The kids sat at the table inside, where Grandma had prepared apple cider and warm treats. They told stories of their costumes and laughed about Bingo chasing shadows in the yard.
When it was time to leave, Grandpa handed each of them a glowing lantern shaped like a pumpkin. “These will guide you home,” he said with a wink.
Walking back through the night, JJ held his lantern high. “See? Halloween isn’t scary when we’re together. It’s full of fun, candy, and surprises.”
The children skipped happily toward the parade, their lanterns glowing like stars. The streets filled with music, laughter, and the sound of trick-or-treat bags rustling with candy.
As the moon shone above, JJ whispered to YoYo and TomTom, “This is the best Halloween night ever.”
And with that, the family joined the parade, ready for more fun, more treats, and more stories to tell before bedtime.
